Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2011 is an all-in-one
server solution designed to help you keep your data more secure and
your company more productive. It provides many of the features used
by larger companies, such as e-mail, Internet connectivity,
internal Web sites, remote access, support for mobile devices, file
and printer sharing at a highly competitive price.
There are two editions: Standard and Premium. Both feature
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and Exchange Server 2007 and are
suitable for organisations with up to 75
users and who operate from a single site. It provides
a cost effective way for small businesses to gain the benefits of
the Microsoft Server platform without the significant expenditure a
full blown Windows, Exchange and SQL Server licence would
aFinite typically partner Small
Business Server installations with complementary services and
products such as Anti-Virus, Anti-Spam, Backup &
Recovery solutions as well as firewall, VPN and router
appliances to provide a complete package.
Haven't they phased SBS 2011 out?
You may, or may not be aware, but Microsoft have phased out the
Small Business Server product line. The key ingredients of Small
Business Server have now been separated - specifically, Microsoft
have removed Exchange Server from the Windows Server 2012
replacement for the Small Business Server product line which is
known as Windows Server 2012 Essentials. This has a lower user
limit of 25 users, but no need to purchase CALs along the way.
The plan here is that Microsoft expects users of Windows Server
2012 Essentials to partner this with an Office 365 subscription to
provide the Exchange functionality. While this may seem to be a
negative point, the rise of spam has meant that every on-premise
Exchange installation has to be parterned with either a server
based or hosted filtering system at an additional cost. given that
for a relativley low number of users, filtering can cost up to £4
per user per month, it just doesn't make sense to endorse this when
Office 365 offers Exchange Online Level 1 mailboxes with virus and
spam protection and resilient hosting for just £2.60 + VAT
Already have Small Business Server?
If you already have Small Business Server, are you taking full
advantage of its features? The most visible part of SBS from an end
user perspective is Exchange Server. Exchange is much more than
just an email tool. Together with Outlook, it provides a very
powerful tool to share access to mailboxes, Distribution lists,
calendars and contacts across your business. aFinite can help you
get more from your existing investment.
